"Fear" Maya Alvarez Studio Workshop Sophomore, 2022
This is my second year taking ceramics and my first year taking studio workshop. The idea of my art show this year is fear. I used colors and animals that are generally associated with fear to emphasis the idea of fear. The mask and hands represent fear taking control of and making people feel like they're drowning when in contact with it. The mask is half happy to show how sometimes fear is masked with a happy face. The spiders and snakes represent whatever someone might be afraid of, whether it's a physical fear like a spider or something physiological like fear of heights. The hands were made by flattening out a slabs for the palms, roll out coils for the fingers, and score and slip them together. When one of the hands got bone dry, a nail chipped off, but I took this as an opportunity to support the point of my show. The imperfections and mistakes in my show only strengthened the idea of fear and uncertainty that my show focusses on. I hope to continue to work with clay throughout my time at Trinity.
